Sumo Paint is a powerful web-based graphics editor with a variety of different editing tools. Sumo Paint can be used as a paint program and photo editing program. With Sumo Paint you can save your artwork on your computer but also on Sumo account in the web. This allows you to open your images from any computer. All you need is a network connection.

Sumo Paint is a product of Snap Group Ltd (http://www.snap.fi).

A good way to learn Sumo Paint and its possibilities is simply to poke around with different tools, properties and attributes. Have fun with it! Here is a list of some of Sumo Paint's awesome features:

2.1.1 Layers with blending modes - back to top

Sumo Paint has advanced support for layers. Layers support these features: Opacity, blend mode, Hide, Duplicate, Rotate, Merge Visible, Merge Down, Flatten, Delete, Bring to Front, Send to Back, Move Up and Move Down.

2.1.2 Layer effects - back to top

Sumo Paint layer effects remain editable after saving to Sumo account. Currently Sumo Paint has the following layer effects: Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Outer Glow, Inner Glow, Bevel, Color Overlay, Stroke, Gradient Bevel and Gradient Glow.

Sumo Paint has a wide selection of unique shape tools. All the shape tools support shape trails and shape effects properties. The shape options bar includes sliders for changing line opacity, line diameter and fill opacity. Symmetric shape tools include the option to change the number of symmetry points (sides).

Sumo Paint offers a wide selection of brushes for digital painters and tablet fanatics. The brush tools options bar has a slider for setting the brush diameter, opacity and flow values. The brush tool supports scattering, random rotation, gravity, blend modes and brush effects including smoothing, bevel, wet edges and ink.

The ink mode is unique feature of Sumo Paint for creating realistic ink impressions. Adjust ink wetness with mode value slider. The ink mode can be applied to the brush, ink, pen, symmetry and all the shape tools.

2.1.6 Text Tool - back to top

Sumo Paint's rich text editor uses the true type fonts installed in the user's local computer. The text object can be scaled and edited at the same time. The text tool has an option to transform the text (scale, rotation and skew).

2.1.7 Clone Stamp Tool - back to top

The Clone stamp tool enables real-time drawing with Sumo Paint's brush shapes. You can set diameter, opacity and flow for the brush and use the following effects: scattering, random rotate, gravity,smoothing, wet edges, bevel, ink and smoothed ink. Use Shift+click or Alt+click to set the clone source point.

The eraser tool has a wide selection of brushes and also supports scattering, random rotation and gravity. There are also sliders for the brush's diameter, opacity, hardness and size.

Sumo Paint has several advanced filters including but not limited to Blur, Sharpen, Emboss, Detect Edges, Glowing Edges, Liquid Waves, Pinch, Twirl, Halftone Pattern, Pixelate, Clouds, Noise, Perlin Noise.

The gradient tool is quite advanced giving the option to tweak multiple properties such as linear/radial, focal point, spread method and blend mode. The tool has a real time preview, so applying a gradient is not guesswork.

Gravity option smoothes the drawn line to curves, making it easy to create abstract and beautiful artwork. The option is available in Symmetry and Brush tools.

Sumo Paint custom shape tool lets you draw your own custom shapes and fills the shape when the mouse button is released.

Shape trails option creates ghost trails for the shape given, creating an interesting and cool effect. Experiment with opacities to get the effect you want. Shape trail is available in Line and Curve tools and in all the shape tools excluding the Custom Shape Tool.

With the legendary symmetry tool and its multiple properties you can create beautiful symmetrical creations. Experiment with symmetry points, gravity and modes to get exactly the result you want.

Sumo Paint magic wand tool has a unique way of showing the selections feather value. At Sumo Paint we call this "the glowing ants". Magic wand has sliders for adjusting tolerance and feather and you can also add or subtract an area from existing selection with the magic wand tool.

Click "Select Pixels" from the layer panel options menu to make a new selection from the layers alpha. You can also select pixels by choosing Select / Select Layer Alpha from the top menu.

You can open any image in Sumo Paint application by dragging and dropping it to the image of the Sumo Paint application.

Sumo Paint has a support for the Cool Iris browser plugin. To enable Cool Iris, just surf to users profile page (username.sumopaint.com) and click the Cool Iris icon from your favorite browser and you are ready to go! You can download Cool Iris from www.cooliris.com.

2.3.1 New... CTRL + N - back to top

From File / New dialog you can start a new Sumo Paint image. You can also change image size from Width and Height -bars. Default image size is width 800 pixels and height 600 pixels.

2.3.2 Open from Sumo Account CTRL + O - back to top

Sumo Account is a space where you can save your work on web. This gives you opportunity to open your images from any computer equipped with a web connection. You can also search the wanted image by name.

2.3.3 Open from My Computer - back to top

Opening from your own computer is done via selecting File -> Open from My Computer. Then just browse and select the image and click Open.

2.3.4 Open from URL... - back to top

Instead of opening a file from you own computer you can also open images from a web address by choosing Open from URL... from the image menu. Enter the URL to the image and click Open.

2.3.5 Save to SUMO Account... CTRL + S - back to top

You may save your images to Sumo Account. This way your images are always available when needed even if you don't use your own computer. To be able to save to a Sumo Account you need to be a registered user and logged in.

2.3.6 Save to My Computer - back to top

Saving to your own computer is done via selecting File -> Save from My Computer. Then just browse to the wanted location and click Save. The image can be saved in JPG or PGN format. When saving as a JPG image you can select the amount of compression used.

2.3.7 Close CTRL + W - back to top

Closes the image window.

2.3.8 Close All - back to top

Closes all the image windows you have open.

2.3.9 Import to Layer - back to top

2.3.9.1 From My Computer... - back to top

You can Import an image from your computer straight into a layer. Browse to the image and click Select. A new layer will be created to hold the newly imported image.

2.3.9.2 From URL... - back to top

You can also import image from web straight into a layer. Just give the URL (web address) of the wanted image and click open. A new layer will be created to hold the newly imported image.

2.3.10 Send to E-mail - back to top

You can send an image straight from Sumo Paint to your friend's e-mail. Just give the e-mail address, message subject, write the message content and click Send.

2.3.11 Login / Register... - back to top

If you haven't already registered and logged in, it can be done from the Login / Register dialog. You can also register and login using the Sumo Paint platform login panel in the top bar. Registering is very simple, just give your Email, username and the password you want, accept the Terms and Conditions and click Register. If you have already registered you can login simply by entering the username and password and clicking the Login button.

2.3.12 Logout - back to top

Logs you out from your Sumo Paint account.

2.3.13 Exit - back to top

Exits Sumo Paint. This option closes the Sumo Paint application window.

2.4 Edit-menu - back to top

From the Edit selection you can find the following options:

2.4.1 Undo CTRL + Z - back to top

Undo history is 20 steps long. You can undo from the Edit menu, the toolbar arrow left or by using shortcut CTRL + Z.

2.4.2 Redo CTRL + Y - back to top

Redo works from Edit selection, the toolbar arrow right or by using the shortcut CTRL + Y.

2.4.3 Cut CTRL + X - back to top

This option Cuts the chosen selection to the clipboard. It can be used from Edit selection or by using the shortcut CTRL + X.

2.4.4 Copy CTRL + C - back to top

This option copies the chosen selection to the clipboard. It can be used from Edit selection or by using the shortcut CTRL + C.

2.4.5 Paste CTRL + V - back to top

This option pastes the contents of the clipboard. It can be used from Edit selection or by using the shortcut CTRL + V.

2.4.6 Clear - back to top

Choose this option to empty the whole Sumo Paint stage.

2.4.9 Free transform CTRL + T - back to top

Free transform can be chosen from the Edit menu or from the toolbar (blue selection on the toolbar image above) or by shortcut keys, pressing CTRL and V buttons from the keyboard at the same time. Free Transform allows you to rotate, move, turn, flip and scale the chosen selection.

2.5 Image menu - back to top

The Image menu allows you to duplicate, change size of image or the canvas, you can also rotate, flip and crop image.

2.5.1 Duplicate - back to top

Choosing the duplicate selection you get a full copy of your image including all layers. The other image window appears with the word "copy" added to the image name.

2.5.2 Image Size... - back to top

To scale an image, choose the Image / Image size dialog.

2.5.3 Canvas Size... - back to top

This dialog changes the canvas size.

2.5.4 Rotate 180 ° - back to top

This option rotates your image 180°.

2.5.5 Rotate 90 ° CW - back to top

Rotates the image 90° clockwise.

2.5.6 Rotate 90° CCW - back to top

Rotates the image 90° counterclockwise.

2.5.7 Flip Horizontal - back to top

Mirrors the image over horizontally.

2.5.8 Flip Vertical - back to top

Flips the image over vertically.

2.5.9 Crop - back to top

Crops the image as chosen selection.

2.5.10 Auto Crop - back to top

Crops the image automatically via trimming the transparent or white edge pixels.

2.6 Select menu - back to top

2.6.1 All Ctrl + A - back to top

Selects all objects from selected layer.

2.6.2 Deselect CTRL + D - back to top

Deselects any selected areas.

2.6.3 Inverse - back to top

Select Inverse inverts the selection of the image. This means that the image contents which are inside of the selection are now outside it, and vice versa.

2.6.4 Border... - back to top

You can select and edit your Selection areas border with this dialog.

2.6.5 Feather... - back to top

Feathering in Sumo Paint is shown in a unique way by showing the strength of the feather with fading color. This dialog selects the size of the feather.

2.6.6 Expand... - back to top

With this dialog you can expand the selected area as shown below.

2.6.7 Contract - back to top

This dialog contracts the selection area by chosen amount of pixels.

2.6.8 Select Layer Alpha - back to top

Selects the alpha information from the layer.

2.6.9 Show Border CTRL + H - back to top

Option allows you to hide or show the selection border.

2.7 Layer -menu - back to top

Sumo Paint has a wide support for layers including many options such as duplicate layer and various layer effects. You will find options also from the bottom of layer panel.

               

2.7.1 Add new layer - back to top

Option adds a new layer to Layer set.

2.7.2 Delete layer - back to top

Option deletes chosen layer.

2.7.3 Duplicate layer - back to top

Option makes a new layer with an exact copy of the chosen layer

2.7.4 Layer Effects - back to top

You can edit your image layer by layer and make different sorts of effects to different layers.

Drop Shadow

Dialog makes a cool Shadow effect and "lifts" chosen layer from canvas. You can change the opacity, strength, distance and the angle of the shadow. You can set the shadow's quality to high, medium or low. The Knockout setting leaves visible only the pixels the effect creates around the source. Hide Source option toggles whether to show the layer source or exclude it. You can also change the color of the Shadow and change the shadow's size on the X and the Y -axis.

Inner Shadow

Inner Shadow makes a nice 3D effect to layer, it "sinks" the layer to canvas. You can change the opacity, strength, distance and the angle of the shadow. You can set the shadow's quality high, medium or low. The Knockout setting leaves visible only the pixels the effect creates around the source. Hide Source option toggles whether to show the layer source or exclude it. You can also change the color of the Shadow and change the shadow's size on the X and the Y -axis.

Outer Glow

This effect gives glowing effect "outside" of the chosen layer. This effect gives glowing effect outside" of the chosen layer. You can change the opacity and strength of glow with the sliders. Use radio buttons to select the glow quality. The Knockout setting leaves visible only the pixels the effect creates around the source. You can also change the color of the Glow and change the Glow's size on the X and the Y -axis.

Inner Glow

Inner Glow dialog makes glow inside of the chosen Layer. You can change the opacity and strength of glow with the sliders. Use radio buttons to select the glow quality. The Knockout setting leaves visible only the pixels the effect creates around the source. You can also change the color of the Glow and change the Glow's size on the X and the Y -axis.

Bevel

With Bevel you can make your image look three-dimensional. You can change the strength, distance and angle of bevel with the sliders. Use the radio button to select inner bevel, outer bevel or emboss. Choose the quality of bevel with the quality radio button. You can also change the highlight and shadow colors and change the bevel size on the X and the Y -axis.

Color Overlay

From the Color Overlay dialog you may change the color of objects in specific layer. You can select the opacity and strength with the sliders in the dialog window.

Stroke

The stroke dialog allows you to add stroke outlining the. With the slider you can select the opacity and size of the stroke. With stroke position radio buttons you may select if you want to have inner or outer stroke. Naturally you can select the color of stroke too.

Gradient Bevel

With Gradient Bevel you can make your image look like "three-dimensional". You can change the strength, distance and angle of gradient bevel with the sliders. Use the radio button to select if you want to have inner bevel, outer bevel or emboss. Choose the quality of bevel with the radio button. You may affect to gradient colors by moving color stops at the gradient bar. Add new color stops by clicking the gradient bar. To delete color stops drag them away from the gradient bar. You can also change gradient bevel size with X and Y -axis.

Gradient Glow

Gradient Glow dialog makes glow inside of the chosen Layer. You can change the strength, distance and angle of glow with the sliders. Use radio buttons to select if you want to have inner glow, outer glow or full glow. Use glow quality -radio buttons to select the glow quality. You may affect to gradient colors by moving color stops at the gradient bar. Add new color stops by clicking on the gradient bar. For deleting colors stops drag them away from gradient bar. You can also change the glow color and change glow size with X and Y -axis.

Copy Layer Effects

Option copies all the used effects from chosen the layer.

Paste Layer Effects

Option pastes all the copied layer effects to the chosen layer.

Clear Layer Effects

Option clears layer from used layer effects.

2.7.5 Bring to front - back to top

Option changes the layer order so that chosen layer comes on top of all layers in layer menu.

2.7.6 Move layer up - back to top

Option changes the layer order by moving layer one step up on the layer menu.

2.7.7 Move layer down - back to top

Option changes the layer order by moving layer one step down on the layer menu.

2.7.8 Send to back - back to top

Option changes the layer order by sending layer to the bottom of all layers.

2.7.9 Rotate Layer - back to top

With Rotate Layer dialog you can rotate the chosen layer.

180°

Option rotates the chosen layer 180°.

90° CW

Option the chosen layer 90° clockwise.

90°CCW

Option the chosen layer 90° counterclockwise.

Flip Horizontal

Option flips the chosen layer horizontally.

Flip Vertical

Option flips the chosen layer vertically.

2.7.10 Merge Down - back to top

Option merges the chosen layer with the layer under it in Layer palette.

2.7.11 Merge Visible - back to top

Option merges all Visible layers into one layer.

2.7.12 Flatten Image - back to top

Option combines all the layers into one layer.

2.8 Adjustments -menu - back to top

Sumo Paint includes many features for adjusting image. Menu has the following dialogues: Brightness / Contrast, Color Balance, Color Temperature, Hue / Saturation, Levels, Auto Levels, Desaturate, Negative, Posterize and Threshold

2.8.1 Brightness / Contrast... - back to top

Use sliders to adjust image brightness and contrast between values from –100 to 100.

2.8.2 Color Balance... - back to top

Adjust the image's color balance by moving sliders. You can increase or decrease the red, green and blue offset of image.

2.8.3 Color Temperature - back to top

This dialog gives you a possibility to adjust the temperature of colors. You can change the value from Color Temperature slider.

2.8.4 Hue / Saturation... - back to top

Move sliders to adjust image hue, saturation and lightness between values -100 to 100. This could be a useful feature for adjusting photographs.

2.8.5 Levels... - back to top

This professional filter of levels is a simple tool for improving contrast of the image. By using levels you can increase the contrast to make the image look rich with saturated colors. By radio buttons you may select adjust RGB, red, green or blue channel.

2.8.6 Auto Levels - back to top

In addition to Levels you may use Auto Levels -option. Auto Levels defines the tonal range and contrast by simply commanding the way that darkest pixels shall be black and the lightest ones shall be white. The intermediate pixels are spread over the range in between those points.

2.8.7 Desaturate - back to top

Desaturate removes all colors from a layer or selection, leaving a greyscale image that is still in RGB color mode.

2.8.8 Negative - back to top

Negative adjustment inverts all colors in selected layer. Inversion is based on a scale 0 to 255. A color value that is 255 before inverting becomes 0 after inverting. A value of 50 before inverting becomes 205 after inverting.

2.8.9 Posterize... - back to top

Posterize adjustment is designed to analyze the pixel colors either of a selected area of an image or the whole image and reduce the number of colors-while retaining the look of the original image.

2.8.10 Threshold... - back to top

The Threshold adjustment converts image to high-contrast, black-and-white image. By default, the midpoint of the tonal range is the threshold. All pixels lighter than the threshold value are converted to white and darker pixels are converted to black. You may change threshold level by moving the slider. Value of the threshold level is between 0 and 255. Threshold can be used for the whole layer or for selected area.

2.9 Filters -menu - back to top

Sumo Paint has a variety of different kinds of filters, which you can use creating and presenting images.

2.9.1 Original Image - back to top

This is what the example image looks like before it has been edited with Sumo Paint filters.

2.9.2 Blur... - back to top

The blur filter softens a selection or an image as shown in the screenshot below. In the dialog window you can scale the force of blur and change the quality of blur. You can choose from Settings -radio buttons if you want to Show Original or Fade Original -image. You can also change the Alpha of Blur.

2.9.3 Sharpen... - back to top

With the Sharpen dialog you can enhance images edges using a simple algorithm. You can choose the level of sharpening between 1-100 from the dialog box. Be careful using Sharpen filter because image can be easily ruined by sharpening images over.

2.9.4 Emboss - back to top

The Emboss filter makes a selection appear raised by repressing the color within the image, layer or selection and tracing edges with black. It stamps and carves the active layer or selection, giving it relief with bumps and hollows. Bright areas are raised and dark ones are carved.

2.9.5 Detect Edges - back to top

Detect Edges -filter eliminates details in an image and only displays object outlines. The filter works by reading the values of surrounding pixels.

2.9.6 Glowing Edges - back to top

The filter finds the edges in the image and makes them very light while making the remainder of the image very black. This dialog gives you opportunity to scale edges, change the quality of them and choose wether to Outer Edge or Invert selection. You can also change the opacity of edges with the Edges Alpha slider.

2.9.7 Liquid Waves... - back to top

With Liquid Waves Filter you can make the image appear as it is a reflection on the surface of water. In the dialog window you can scale the size of waves, change the shapes of pattern and use fractal or tile waves. Try out also the Randomize Pattern -button.

2.9.8 Pinch... - back to top

This feature creates an effect that it seems like a round object is been pushed towards (if Pinch Amount is positive) or away (If Pinch Amount is negative) from you. You can scale the effect with X & Y axis, if you want to create a symmetrical effect, keep the Constrain Proportions. Pinch Amount can be changed from Pinch Amount slider.

2.9.9 Twirl... - back to top

The Twirl Filter creates a twirl effect. From the dialog window you can change the strength of the twirl. To change the appearance of the twirl you can choose both horizontal and vertical functions by choosing functions with Sine, Cosine, Tangent or Inverse Tangent radio buttons. You can also change the center point of twirl with X & Y axis sliders.

2.9.10 Halftone Pattern... - back to top

With this awesome pattern dialog you are able to make different patterns on your image, selection or layer. You can choose the Pattern Shape from Circle, Square, Diamond and Hexagon. You can also change settings as Constrain Scale, Frame Shape, Douple Pattern and Subtractive Fill. You can also change Pattern Scale Offset from slider.

2.9.11 Pixelate... - back to top

This dialog allows you to create a pixelated effect on your image. From the dialog window you can scale pixel size with X & Y -axis, choose whether the pixel shape is square or round and change settings (Constrain Scale, Auto Width and Auto Height).

2.9.12 Clouds - back to top

To make a misty or cloudy effect on your image you must create a new layer, choose Clouds option from Filter-menu and then change the opacity of layer depending on your needs.

2.9.13 Noise... - back to top

Noise dialog allows you to add noise effect on your image. Amount can be between 1-100. If you want the noise effect to be in B&W click the Monochrome radio button active.

2.9.14 Perlin Noise... - back to top

With the Perlin Noise dialog you can create a versatile noise which can be used for example producing a wide range of different textures: clouds, gas, rock, sand, dirt, liquid, metal, wood, plastic etc. In the dialog you can change noise pattern and shape. You can choose different color channels and change settings (Fractal, Grayscale, Symmetry). You can also change the opacity of Perlin Noise from Pattern Alpha slider.

You may zoom in either at view menu, info/zoom window or pressing shortcut keys CTRL and + at the same time from your keyboard.

2.10.3 Zoom Out (CTRL + -) - back to top

You may zoom out either at view menu, info/zoom window or pressing shortcut keys CTRL and - at the same time from your keyboard.

From the perspective drop down _ menu you may choose if you want to use standard panel mode or maximized panel mode.

2.10.6 Screen Mode - back to top

You can change screen mode to normal browser window or full screen mode.

Full Screen option removes browser menu bars and lets you work Sumo Paint full screen. To exit full screen mode choose Normal Browser Window or press ESC-button on your keyboard.

2.10.7 Fit on Screen CTRL + 0 - back to top

Fits the image on screen vertically.

2.10.8 Actual Pixels - back to top

Returns the image on it's actual size.

2.10.9 Smooth Zooming - back to top

Selecting Smooth Zooming you may choose if you want to turn smooth zooming on or off.

3 Sumo Paint Platform - back to top

3.1 Adding image - back to top

You may add pictures from your computer to Sumo Paint. To add image go to Images > Load new image. Image needs to be in JPG, PNG or GIF-format. Size limit for the uploaded file is 15 Mb.

3.2 User profile - back to top

Every registered user has a user profile. You can see your profile by selecting "My profile". In the profile page you can see your profile image, basic information, your best rated images and your favorite images. There is also a wall of yours in the profile page. Yourself and other users may write to your wall.

You may use any public image as your profile image. To add or change the profile image, go to "Edit settings". At My Settings you may also choose what information about you is public.

3.3 Searching for images - back to top

To search for images (your own or other users' public images) go to Images and use the search tool. You may write the searching terms and select whether you want to search from your own pictures or also from other users' public images.

You may choose if you want to arrange images by rank, views, size or date. You can also choose either large thumbs or small thumbs.

3.4 Image options - back to top

You can go to image options by selecting image. Depending if the image is made by yourself or by other users, there are options available. Options available also depend from publicity of the image.

3.5 Comment image - back to top

All registered users may comment images. To comment an image open Comment view either from the image tools bar or by click the Show in the small Comments box on the right hand side. In the Comment view you may comment the image or reply to a previous comment. Screenshot from comment view below.

3.6 Community - back to top

Sumo Paint Community brings Sumo painters together. In the Community page you can see online users, latest image comments, latest user comments and latest public images. You can find more information about a users by clicking the user's profile picture.
